Berchtesgaden - Germany
General information
about the city
ca. 10.000 habitants - The Berchtesgaden basin forms a salient that penetrates deeply into Austria. There are several historical reasons for this: the development of a priory for Augustinian monks, becoming a pivot of the Bavarian power base against the excessive aspirations of the greedy Archbishops of Salzburg. Berchtesgaden was also Hitler's summer retreat. A point of departure on the German Alpine Road, Berchtesgaden is intensely busy with tourists throughout the summer.
