General information about the city
ca. 1.500.00 habitants. - Established in the 9C as a small village near to a Benedictine abbey, by the 12C, Munich had become the focal point of trade and business in Bavaria. This was the starting point for a city that has had a long and illustrious past. Munich became a ducal residence in 1255, when it welcomed the Wittelsbach dynasty. In 1503, when the Wittelsbach empire crumbled, Munich became the only capital of the duchy of Bavaria. As a cultural focal point, Munich nonetheless had to wait until the 19C to reach its peak in the arts, thanks largely to Louis I, King of Bavaria and a great lover of classic Antiquity. With the foundation of the Jugend review in 1896, Munich became a centre for Art Nouveau, and with the exhibition of the Blue Rider in 1911, a centre for modern painting. Today, aside from its craftwork that continues to play an important role here, Munich has seen incredible development with its hi-tech industrial activities. Opened in 1980, the European Patents Office chose Munich as its base and thus showed recognition for the city's scientific past, illustrated so well by Liebig and Ohm. But the capital of Bavaria is particularly well known for its beer. Five million hectolitres of beer are brewed here, most of which is consumed in the city's taverns, accompanied by a culinary speciality, white saussages, chickens and Steckerlfisch (grilled fish) served during the beer festival - Oktoberfest .
